March 2012

    FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Bringing You New Opportunities for Growth, Learning and Industry Recognition

NEPIRC Executive Director Eric Joseph Esoda, CPAWelcome to NEPIRC’s March 2012 e-newsletter. While this issue may be a little late in getting to you, I trust that you’ll find it well worth the wait and valuable to your company.

Within this issue, we’ll recognize Procter & Gamble Paper Products, one of the region’s largest employers, and their innovative Youth Apprenticeship Program – a proven model that other manufacturers can replicate to create a pipeline of highly-qualified workers.

We’ll also introduce your company to a new $1.8 billion business growth opportunity and explain how your company can become more actively engaged in a nationwide Next Generation Railcar supply chain initiative, which NEPIRC has been chosen to coordinate for the states of Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and Delaware. You’ll also learn about several best practice sharing opportunities – one at the national level and one in Upstate New York – for which NEPIRC is providing scholarships and special networking options. The 2012 “Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania” competition has recently begun accepting applications, and in the paragraphs below you’ll discover where to go for an application and how NEPIRC can help you pursue the award best-suited for your industry and company size.

No NEPIRC e-newsletter would be complete without new information about the industrial climate within our region, so this month’s Regional News section summarizes manufacturing employment by county, the relative size of the industry within each county, and by-county average manufacturing wages.

We’ll close the issue with NEPIRC News, which highlights our ongoing support of careers in manufacturing and announces a special speaking engagement that will once again enable NEPIRC to bring the success stories of manufacturers from our region to a national audience.

Thus far in 2012, we’ve helped our clients realize more than $26.5 million in sales impact – or nearly $71 of sales for every $1 they invested in our services. In addition, our clients reported $1.54 of cost savings for every $1 expended on NEPIRC engagements. That’s proof that our services create real value for our clients, our stakeholders and our region.

I hope that you continue to find NEPIRC’s news and information valuable, and that you will consider contacting us to explore ways in which we can work together to pursue profitable growth opportunities for your company. Please feel free to contact me at 570-819-8966 or via email to Eric@NEPIRC.com at any time.

With great thanks,

Click to play a video of Proctor and GambleProcter & Gamble Paper Products of Mehoopany was selected as the March 2012 “Made in Northeastern PA” featured manufacturer.

Over the past 45 years, Procter & Gamble’s manufacturing facility, located just outside of Tunkhannock, has grown to become one of the largest employers in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Wyoming County facility employs more than 2,000 people and supports thousands of additional regional jobs in trucking, maintenance and other professions, with hundreds of tractor-trailers leaving the plant daily.

Procter & Gamble was selected because of their innovative Youth Apprentice Program, which is a blueprint for successfully creating a workforce of the future. Their Youth Apprenticeship Program represents a partnership between industry, education and the community. Through the program, high school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to work at Procter & Gamble one school day per week and every Saturday. They are assigned to a mentor who not only monitors the student’s progress at the plant, but also ensures that the student is maintaining his or her educational goals in school.
